What if baseball fans were as fiercely self-conscious & pessimistic & angry as IndyCar fans? What would their message boards look like?
By all means, allow me.

**METS/BREWERS OPEN THREAD**
MisterMet86 10:28pm 6/29/09
I’ve been a Mets fan my whole life, but after tonight, I think I’m done. Bud Selig is ruining the sport!!!!!!! A combined 32 hits and 16 runs tonight?!?!?!?! WHAT IS THIS – A BEER LEAGUE SOFTBALL GAME!?!?!?! That’s not baseball……its BULLSH*T!!!!!!!! And it’s BORING!!! All because Dud Selig is retarded and won’t increase the width of home plate from 17 inches to 19.5!! IDIOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That would return baseball to its golden years of pitching duels and shutouts and everything that made it our National Pasttime!! Satchel Paige and Walter Big Train Johnson are rolling over in their graves.
FIX THIS PROBLEM NOW MR. SELIG!!!!!!!!!!! OR GET OUT!!!!!!!!!!!
Mookie_Wilson’s_Hamstring 10:32pm 6/29/07
Couldn’t agree more. These high-scoring games are ruining the purity of the sport and I want to slap Selig in the face with a lawnmower. You know what the REAL problem is? It’s this arcane rule that for whatever reason, a 2-strike foul ball isn’t a strike. WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!? If a 1-strike fould ball is a strike, then that should hold true for a 2-strike foul ball!!! HEY MR. SELIG…. have you heard that what’s good for the goose is good for the gander!?!?! I’d say no, because your a f-ing moron!! And until this asymetrical injustice is fixed and these scores stop resembling unrealistic video-game scores, i’ll take my business elsewhere, thank you very much.
I HOPE YOU GET A CROTCH BUNION AND DIE, MR. SELIG!!! YOU’RE RUINING BASEBALL!!!

Just wait and see — the ratings for tonight’s snore-fest on ESPN will be AWFUL!!!!!!!!! We had friends over because we wanted to introduce them to Mets baseball, and they were all like, “This is gay, we’re going home.” And that was in the FOURTH INNING!!!!!!!! I was SOOOOO embarrassed!!!
I’m willing to bet that happened all over America too. So, so, so sad. I hate you, Boob Selig!!!

Nail, meet head. Well said, Mr. Met.
It’s a real easy problem to fix, folks: the pitching mound needs to be moved forward 3.8 inches (from 60′ 6″ to 60′ 2.2″). That’s the distance it was at the Polo Grounds back when the games meant something, back when the games were spectacularly awesome. But because MLB is trying to destroy itself in a hail of stupidity and lack of foresight, they won’t change a thing.
R.I.P., baseball. You had a good life.

I don’t mean to interrupt the doom-and-gloom discussion here, but does anyone want to talk about tonight’s game?? I thought it was a great game, and Fernando Nieve showed signs of becoming a STRONG #2 starter. Anyone?

Oh yeah — great idea … let’s talk about Nieve’s changeup when THE VERY FABRIC OF OUR BELOVED SPORT IS UNRAVELLING RIGHT BEFORE OUR EYES?!?!?!!? Go f#*!k yourself, you communist greaseball.
Personally, I’d rather see our sport fixed. And nothing will fix it quicker than raising the pitcher’s mound by a quarter of an inch. 10.5 inches above home plate was probably fine back in the 50′s and 60′s, but NOT TODAY!!!!!! Not with the athleticism and size of these hitters. No, it MUST be raised to 10.75 inches, minimum.
But alas, Bud Selig is far too dumb to see that and he won’t do a damn thing. And baseball will continue to die a slow, painful death. Go to hell, Selig.

I agree with everyone here. Except for Orosco_Pete, who clearly works for MLB and is legally blind and probably a child molester.
I have nothing to add to the excellent insights, really. Except that I thought the television coverage was just okay. Not great, but not bad either. A 5.03874 out of 10. We could do worse than Johnny Miller and Joe Morgan, I suppose. Let’s just hope that America agrees and that they didn’t find the broadcast team disagreeable in some fashion.
btw — who won the game?
There’s a point to made from all this, although I’m not entirely sure what that is right now.

I think they need to install a Hanford Device on every bat.

MrsTomSeaver, when will you realize that everyone outside of Yonkers hates the Mets?

But, if all the avid IndyCar fans didn’t b!tch nonstop about how the sport isn’t living up to their expectations the sport could potentially…grow. Become popular even. The nerve! What’s next? — a special Silent Pagoda section over at Deadspin?!

Roy…you’re an IU fan. It is an equitable situation. The hopeless feeling of having something you love destroyed in front of your eyes. This is the Mike Davis era. Hopefully, there won’t be a Sampson era.

If you haven’t heard I’m looking for work. I can help baseball immensely. I have a few awesome ideas for how to take baseball to the next level. First, split baseball into two separate leagues like I did with Open Wheel racing back in ’96. Seriously, the split couldn’t have gone more to plan. MLB is already partially split but I’ll separate them completely. ALB games will air on Oxygen and NLB will air on PBS. Both Networks are desperate to increase their ratings from .005 to .007 and will pay dearly for NLB and ALB games. All games will be played at 8am so we won’t have to compete with any other sports. Imagine the audience we’ll get airing our races at non-traditional times on unwatched channels, it will be epic!! Breakfast at Long Beach!! I’ll make sure that each team only gets to play with one bat and one ball, that way all teams are playing with the same equipment and it will make everyone equal. If a bat breaks or you lose your ball then you forfeit. Finally, I’ll require that each team has at least one chick on the squad.
These are just a few ideas I have for baseball. I’m putting the finishing touches on my resume and will send it in next week. Any support would be much appreciated.

Hilarious. But sadly the crazy diehards are right in this rare instance. I’d demand cash up front if I were you, Roy.
